FC Barcelona Rugby Section... is waiting for you!

The Rugby section at FCB Barcelona is promoting its school for kids 5-15 years old. You can attend their open doors session on 13th May.

They also have 3 senior teams, the first one is at the highest level in the Spanish league. Most players are amateur although some of them became semi-professional.

Catalan TV in English

There is a channel which broadcasts an hour in English everyday. Programmes are about news, interviews, debates, etc. The channel is El Punt Avui Televisió and all the programmes are identified with the label "English hour".

Barcelona: AFL Grand Final 2015 Live (October 3)

Belushi's Barcelona is one of the venues where you can watch the 2015 AFL Grand Final Live.

They will host again the biggest Aussie Rules Grand Final event. They will show the action live on their big screens with English commentary.

Throughout the morning the bar will be open and they will have the live Aussie Rules action on the big screen with loads of Hot Meat Pies on the go, Aussie beers and breakfast specials.

Interview to the President of the Australian Football League of Catalonia (LFAC)

I met Pere Casan, president of the Australian Football League of Catalonia (LFAC), the federation of Catalan footy clubs at the Michael Collins Pub while we were watching the Australian Football League Grand Final. He agreed to answer some questions to inform about the situation of Aussie Rules in Catalonia.

Does footy have many followers in this country?
Footy is still fairly unknown in this country. Most people know about it, but they don't know what is it about, what it stands for and the fact that they can play it in here. Footy is more known for its fights, hits and tackles than for what it really is: a great sport with a lot of strategy, dinamism, perfect to get fit and a lot of history behind.

How many clubs are in the LFAC?
Currently there are three clubs, two of which coexist in the southern part of Catalonia (near the city of Valls) and the other one in the outskirts of Barcelona.

Do they play international matches?
The clubs have played a few friendly games against other clubs from Spain, France and the UK. Our Catalan national team is a founding member of the nowadays called AFL Europe, organization through which footy is arranged around Europe. We have been playing in the Euro Cup (the 9-a-side European Championship since 2005). We have only missed 2012 due to the economic crisis, but we hope we can travel again to participate next year.

Can anyone practise Australian football?
In Catalonia, yes. We're amateur, so we're in it to have a good time. In Australia, they are professional athletes who earn salaries for playing footy. To be honest, we're also far from the best countries in Europe on this sport (Ireland, Denmark, UK, etc), but we still manage to compete with passion nonetheless. We welcome both catalans who want to try the sport for the first time (and we teach them) as well as seasoned Aussies who either live here for a short period of time and need to mantain their fitness, or those who live here in a more permanent basis and just want to keep some kind of contact with their background. The more the merrier.

Once again we enjoyed togheter the AFL Grand Final, this time at Michael Collins Pub.

In this occasion we also had  our friends from the LFAC (Lliga de Futbol Australià de Catalunya), even its president Pere Casan (thanks Pere for the promotion).

Once again we'll keep the tradition, we'll be seeing the AFL Grand Final in Barcelona, another excuse to meet up.

Field Hockey in Castelldefels

Do you miss your [Field] Hockey and finding it difficult to find a club in Barcelona?
Castelldefels H.C. Men's Section are seeking players for next season. The club currently runs a single Men's XI playing in the Catalan League but next season will field a second, Veterans team. Thet are therefore looking for players of all ages. The club is conveniently based close to Castelldefels train station, a 25 minute journey from Barcelona. In addition to the Men's section, they have a very successful Women's section, kids teams from the age of 5 years old and up, as well as training evenings for all levels.

The clash between the European and South American champions in Japan has finished with a victory for Barça (4-0). Futbol Club Barcelona has picked its second world cup after winning the competition in 2009.

Jonah Lomu promoting rugby at the III Global Sports Forum in Barcelona

Jonah Lomu the former All Blacks player, has visited Barcelona to participate in The Global Sports Forum. He enjoyed the Barça-Arsenal and compared the All Blacks and Barça, explaining that both are “more than a team”.

Mr Lomu, who is known as “The Speed”, also talked about the “lost final” in 1995 when NZ was defeated by South Africa (as the film “Invictus” explains). He talked about mixed feelings, losing was obviously sad but the effect for the South African people was very positive.

He said he expects a good result for NZ in this year’s Ruby World Cup held in NZ.

As you can see we enjoyed a very interesting guest here in BCN!!!!!

Australian Rules Football in Catalonia

Australian rules football in Catalonia is run by the LFAC (Lliga de futbol australià de Catalunya / Catalan League of Australian Football). LFAC is a member of Aussie Rules Europe. The first club in Catalonia (Belfry Valls) was founded in Valls.

The teams playing the Catalan League nowadays are:

- Cornellà Bocs (Catalonia, 2010 Catalonia Champions)
- Belfry Valls (Catalonia)
- Perpignan Tigers (Northern Catalonia)
- Andorra Crows (Andorra)

The Catalan national team has played three EU cups, in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010.
